- OAKWOOD COMMUNITY CENTER AND LEISURE ACTIVITIESPosted on: 2008-03-31Leisure Services
In our own town, Oakwood residents enjoy a variety of leisure activities sponsored by the city and administered through the department of Leisure Services. Athletic and cultural activities, trips, classes, dances, art shows, health screenings and more are offered throughout the year to residents of all ages. The Leisure Services Department also maintains parks, natural areas and boulevards in cooperation with the Public Works Department.
Oakwood's location, adjacent to the cities of Dayton and Kettering, affords citizens a variety of nearby leisure and cultural activities. Recreation ranging from golf and boating to classical and country music performances are available throughout the year. The greater Miami Valley also includes a wealth of attractions and events, including The United States Air Force Museum, Paramount Kings' Island Amusement Park and The Beach Waterpark.
COMMUNITY CENTER
The Oakwood Community Center, located at 105 Patterson Road, houses the department of Leisure Services, and is the home of Gardner Pool. This pool was a gift to Oakwood citizens and provides relaxation from Memorial Day to Labor Day for resident members.
Membership in the community center allows residents to participate for reduced fees in activities seven days a week. The first floor includes a 'great room' which is scheduled for everything from step aerobic and ballet classes to private weddings and class reunions. Full service kitchen facilities, smaller meeting rooms, and a piano are available as well. Oakwood residents and members receive a rental discount to use this facility.
The lower level of the community center houses the Teen Center and the Health Center. The pre teen and teen center offers ping pong, billiards, a large screen television and other games for students aged eight to eighteen. Residents sixteen and over enjoy Nautilus, Universal and free weight equipment in the Health Center, which also features a stair climber, rowing machine and stationary bicycle.
The Community Center also sponsors trips for students and adults, plus a full range of athletic activities including volleyball, tennis, baseball, softball, soccer, basketball and swimming. A variety of art, drama, dance and gymnastics classes are offered for all ages. Walking and jogging are probably the city's most popular leisure activities. Route maps and safety guidelines are available at the community center.
TENNIS
Tennis is a proud city tradition, with courts at Shafor and Orchardly Parks recognized as some of the finest public courts anywhere. Instruction is provided for all ages and levels. When not in use for varsity tennis or lessons, courts are available on a first come, first served basis year round.
PARKS
The City is proud of its three neighborhood parks, Orchardly, Shafor and Fairridge. Playground equipment, landscaping and access for the handicapped have been significantly upgraded at all three parks.

Shafor Park is located on Shafor Boulevard and Patterson Road. Activities include summer day camp, tennis lessons, Ice Cream Social, and an annual concert. Next to the pool and Shafor Park is the Oakwood Community Center.
